Why Is My AC Freezing Up?
Ice on an air conditioner means restricted airflow first and a low refrigerant charge second. Too little air moving across the evaporator coil drives its surface below freezing, so the condensation that should drain away turns to ice instead. A dirty filter, a blocked or closed return vent, a crushed duct or a failing blower motor all do that. A low charge freezes the same coil for a different reason, and low charge means a leak somewhere in the system. Shut the cooling off at the thermostat and run the fan alone so the ice can thaw, because nobody can diagnose a frozen coil and a running compressor is at risk.
